Free 2nd Grade Place Value Worksheets + Answer Key

Share with your friends!

Place value can look simple to us as adults, but understanding that the 4 in 347 means 40, not simply 4, is a big step for a second grader.

I created these free 2nd grade place value worksheets to give kids more than rows of the same problem. The pack moves from visual models and base-ten blocks to expanded form, word form, comparing 3-digit numbers, and place value reasoning.

What Do Second Graders Learn About Place Value?

In second grade, children learn that the three digits in a 3-digit number represent hundreds, tens, and ones. They also work with the idea that 100 is the same as 10 tens, read and write numbers to 1,000 in standard, word, and expanded form, compare three-digit numbers, and mentally find 10 or 100 more or less.

These skills match the Grade 2 Number & Operations in Base Ten standards, including 2.NBT.A.1, 2.NBT.A.3, 2.NBT.A.4, and 2.NBT.B.8.

I deliberately left rounding out of this pack because rounding whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100 appears in the Grade 3 Common Core standards.

If your child is still working with two-digit numbers, my tens-and-ones practice for first graders is a gentler place to start.

What's Included in These 2nd Grade Place Value Worksheets?

These place value worksheets for second graders are arranged so children build the skill instead of jumping straight into abstract number problems.

The printable pack includes practice with:

  • hundreds, tens, and ones place value charts
  • building and counting numbers with base-10 blocks
  • making the same number in different ways
  • identifying the place and value of a digit
  • understanding zero as a placeholder
  • writing numbers in expanded and standard form
  • writing 3-digit numbers in word form
  • showing numbers in standard, expanded, and word form
  • finding 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, and 100 less
  • comparing 3-digit numbers using <, > and =
  • solving place value mystery numbers
  • a mixed 2nd grade place value review

There are eight answer-key pages at the end, so checking independent practice is quick.

How to Use the Printable Place Value Worksheets

You do not need to print the whole packet at once. If the concept is new, begin with the place value chart and base-ten block worksheets. Once those feel comfortable, move into digit value, expanded form, comparing numbers, and the challenge pages.

For after-school practice, one page is usually enough. If your child needs a break before sitting down with a pencil, a short screen-free reset can make the transition easier.
